I am quite aware that most of my posts so far have been on the negative side, so I thought I would have a positive one for a change. So here goes:
There are two advertisements that I have seen recently on the interweb and TV here in Australia that I raelly enjoy. The first is the new Schweppes campaign of Schweppervescence
The original ad is this 90 second clip.
Great creativity, and just alround great advertisment in my opinion. On top of that as you would see from their website which I linked earlier, they have just introduced two new shorter ads specifically for Lemonade and Soda water, and I really like the fact that they have put in a couple of extra clips into each ad so it is not just a rehashed shorter version of the original.
The second advertisement that i am currently loving is the new Nike ad.

Big Chicken Hunting
I am going to follow in the footsteps of fellow (but much more experienced) monash blogger Julian Cole and take a shot at Nando's new advertising campaign.
I will start off by saying I love Nando's and have been always enjoyed their food even if it is a bit pricey. Their new advertising campaign though, Big Chicken '08 does absolutely nothing for me.
As Julian mentions in his article Nando's a marketing headcase! "They are clearly a marketing headcase who believe they can change their brand image through readjusting their promotion." Nando's have gone what one would assume to be the "safe route" and taken one of Australia's top rating shows in Big Brother and tried to make their own campaign out of it.
It has failed dismally. If you go to their website which i linked to before, it has their newest Tv advertisment there.
Its fine that its there, nevermind the fact it means absolutely nothing. Their entire website doesn't have much of a feel to it. The winning chicken gets to be marinated in peri peri sauce. That is their entire campaign, you get to vote for your favourite chicken, and that is basically it.
The entire campaign just seems a bit silly to me and has no real point to it. Perhaps it would have worked better as a shampaign with the final "episode" revealing Nando's behind the show.

Facebook Fatigue
I'm going to start off with a video feature that was in the top 20 viral videos for a while
This video suggests that people are starting to get sick and tired of facebook. With the introduction of facebook chat however i would have thought that pageviews would pick up quite a bit.
NOT THE CASE: As Adam Ostrow has explained, facebook pageviews has dropped by 10% in the past month. This is a major problem for facebook, as i was discussing with Peter Wagstaff, their revenue comes from the advertising on the pages. If as one could assume, people are logging onto their home page, and just using the chat feature, they are not looking around facebook and not hitting on those precious ads that are making facebook their money.
That being said, the chat function is awesome and makes me go to facebook a lot more now, simply to use the chat feature but i would say i am using the rest of the site quite a bit less nowadays. Perhaps facebook fatigue is finalyl setting in and its time for the next social networking site to make its mark.
LinkedIn anyone?

CCTV - Catching Currently Taping Videos
More commonly known as closed circuit television, it is becoming an increasingly popular way to film videos, with the ability now to record oneself from these video camers by using a concept known as Video Sniffing. Essentially it allows you to record, well yourself, from the CCTV cameras in the streets.
The Get Out Clause recently filmed an entire video clip strictly by using this technique.
Its basically a free way of recording yourself (after you have bought the required products to make it work) and making a movie out of it.
I first heard of this technique through Triple J's Film Ed where it was discussed as a newish alternative way of film making.

Forgetting Sarah Who?
I recently went to see a film called Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
I must say it is possibly one of the funniest movies i have seen in a long time, and that is easy to see since its by the same people who did 40 year old Virgin.
I was bitterly dissapointing in the TVC's that aired in Australia for this movie. (This is one that aired in the US)
The TV advertisements give this movie almost no credit. I knew it was going to be a crack up due to the main character, Jason Segal, being from my favourite tv show How I Met Your Mother.
My girlfriend had only seen the TVC's for Forgetting Sarah Marshall and based on them had an assumption that this movie was simply going to be a chick flick, so she was quite confused when i asked if she wanted to join me and a mate of mine to go see it.
The Ads give the movie absolutley NO credit as being a hilariously funny movie, rather it makes it seem like one of those chick flick movies that show all their funny bits in the ad's and the rest is just crap.
It is not often that movies are the other way round, in that their advertisements give away some of the average funny bits and save the best bits for the movie.
What i was unaware of was the massive billboard campaign that was launched for the movie which Peter Wagstaff of Marketing Today informed me of. Perhaps i was just driving around the wrong areas.

Who is Simon Oboler?
Gday all, as you would have already discovered my name is Simon Oboler.
I am currently in my second year of a four year degree at Monash Caulfield, doing a double degree in Management and Marketing.
I have been following student bloggers Zac Martin, and his blog Pigs Don't Fly, Julian Cole and his blog Adspace Pioneers, and also Rick Clarke with his blog I Hate Ads, and figured i could hold my own against these guys.
This blog will have my take on varying marketing strategies in Australia and perhaps internationally, as they come to my mind. It will look at what is working, what isn't working, and my own take on how certain campaigns could be improved.
For the most part the blog will be quite infrequent as university and work commitments are my first priority, however whenever i have a thought i will be sure to inform you all.
